life without soda

with 5 comments

Exactly three months ago, I was sitting in a London cafe, sipping a Diet Coke, when I declared I would give up that sweet addiction.  This wasn’t my first time giving something up (I’ve given up meat, alcohol, and sour jelly bellys).  But it was certainly the most difficult.

The first three weeks were the worst.  I call them the dark days.  I had painful migraines, which were only exacerbated by light.  I craved for a sip of diet coke.  No substitute could satisfy my craving. It was always. on. my. mind.

After the migraines subsided, I shifted to resentment. I was disgusted by the power of this addiction; and the control this corn-syrup concoction had over my mind and body. I began an exploration for alternatives (mostly for the caffeine and refreshment).  For me, the best substitutes have been simple (and conveniently healthier): water and tea. They don’t have the upper and energy-boost of soda, but I’m pretty sure they’re better for me in the long run.

Now I feel healthier, less anxious, and I swear my teeth are whiter.  The cravings are less often, and I’m beginning to forget the taste.  And because water and tea are far cheaper than a can of soda, I’m saving a few bucks too.

  1. I can relate entirely. My abstention from Diet Coke came involuntarily when I was a Kiva Fellow for 3 months in Tajikistan (it’s one of the few countries where Coke has no presence). The only thing I drank during that period – save one Diet Coke a friend brought me from Afghanistan – was green or black tea. The first couple of weeks were miserable but by the end of my stay I didn’t miss it at all…

  2. So it’s been almost 5 months without soda, what can you say about it? did you keep your promise?or did you have a diet coke during this period? btw I’m kind of a coke addict. As the day goes by, I feel the need to have a coke, I know soda its not good for your health but its a sweet pleasure. Also what can you say about your health now? Do you feel less tired in the morning? Do you have more energy or more willingness to do things? Excellent blog, greetings and best wishes from Peru.

  3. Christian– I have not cheated at all! In fact, I’m so over soda and don’t plan on ever again having it as part of my diet.

The first month was really hard, but now I barely thing about it. The cravings are completely gone and if I want something sweet or a bit of caffeine, I just drink green tea. I feel healthier and better about myself for breaking the soda-addiction!

    Best of luck in Peru!

  5. Wow, I can’t believe you did it. I dunno what I would do without a cold Diet Coke with my meal. Oh man… that sweet taste, the subtle bitterness, the fizzy goodness.

I know you want one right now…

Hah, I am proud of ya though, it’s not easy to give something up that you love. You have inspired me, but I dunno if I’ll be giving up high fructose corn syrup any time soon.
