There are more slaves today than any point in history.
This is so so hard to stomach.
A few months ago I picked up a book called “A Crime so Monstrous: Face-to-Face with Modern-Day Slavery” after hearing the j-timberlake-look-alike author on NPR. A wrenching stomach ache prevented moving beyond the second chapter. Then today I read this story on ABC, where the news reporter describes how he flew to Haiti and purchased a child in 10 hours. For $150.
Someone’s life, for $150. And apparently that’s a premium price. The average slave is sold for just $90. I can’t imagine an iniquitous individual who would make such a transaction, or how one’s moral compass could manage to go so astray. What is the root of the selfishness and unjust behind the slave trade in our world?
GOOD magazine shared another one of their incredible visualizations (this issue must be on everyones mind). This one shows the hard facts of the slave trade and includes cost comparisons– cost of a slave versus basketball tickets– which appropriately lays on the guilt.
Props to Free the Slaves, a non-profit working to end this atrocity.

Is that in absolute numbers or is it as a fraction of the population?
